Imagine your home security system starts glitching. Sometimes the alarm blares when there is no intruder; other times, someone walks right through the front door and the sensors fail to register a thing. Your body’s peripheral nervous system operates on a very similar principle.
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where the nerves farthest from your brain and spinal cord—most commonly in your hands and feet—become damaged. If your brain is the central command center, these peripheral nerves are the intricate communication cables reporting back on what is happening out in the world.
When the Signals Get Scrambled
When this delicate wiring is compromised, the messages sent back to your brain get distorted. You might experience this as a burning sensation, sudden electrical shocks, or a persistent tingling, much like static on a radio. Many patients describe the peculiar sensation of feeling as though they are walking on bubble wrap, or wearing thick, invisible socks that they cannot take off.
The Danger of "Just Numb"
Here is the trap that many highly intelligent adults fall into: If you have been dealing with the painful, burning, or tingling phases of neuropathy, the eventual onset of total numbness can actually feel like a relief. After all, we have been conditioned to believe that a lack of pain is a sign of healing.
In the case of neuropathy, however, this is a dangerous misconception.
Pain and tingling mean the nerve is distressed and crying out for help. Numbness means the nerve is losing its ability to communicate entirely. A smoke detector that stops beeping because the battery died doesn't mean the fire is out.
Experiencing numbness without pain leaves you incredibly vulnerable. It compromises your balance, increases your risk of falls, and prevents you from feeling minor injuries—like a pebble in your shoe or a blister—until they become severe infections.
